Paige Powell: The Ride at the Portland Art Museum dials it back to New York’s cultural heyday in the Eighties. Powell, a Portland native, climbed the ranks at Interview magazine, ultimately becoming its associate publisher — and, along the way, became cozy with the cool kids of the city’s art scene: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tama Janowitz, Andy Warhol, Stephen Sprouse, Keith Haring and many others. The exhibit, which runs this month till February 21, 2016, features candid photographs and never-before-seen recordings of this New York crew. There’s even an interactive installation, Beulah Land, that recreates a 1984 show of Powell’s photographs — over 800 in all — with a soundtrack mixed by artist David LaChapelle.
